本研究は、地域の基幹産業の盛衰と家族変動との相互関係について、女性の農業労働や農外就労、家事・育児等の家庭内労働の夫婦・親子間の労働配分の変化、家庭内外における女性の労働の変化が世代間関係やジェンダー関係に及ぼした影響を明らかにすることを目的としている。本研究の初年度は、モノづくり地域の基幹産業の変動、女性労働、家族変動の関連性に着目した知見が蓄積されている京都西陣、栃木県と茨城県の県境に位置する結城紬産地、福井県内陸部の繊維産業地域、岐阜市の既製服産地などの繊維関係の地場産業が盛んな製造業地域について先行研究を収集し、検討・分析した。第1に注目したのは、岐阜市の婦人や子ども向け既製服の一大産地に密着して、直系家族の女性の就業パターンを明らかにした『地域産業の盛衰と家族変動の社会学』（前田尚子，晃洋書房，2018）である。前田は、産業時間、世代、家族戦略という3つの視点から、在来的生産システムの盛衰と家族変動のプロセスを分析し、織物業や縫製業などの自営業では女性の持つ技能を軸として家庭内の労働力配分がなされていること、この労働配分は世代交代していくこと、世代間の相補的就業が直系家族の戦略的行動となっていることを示した。第2に『在来産業と家族の地域史－ライフヒストリーからみた小規模家族経営と結城紬生産』（湯澤規子，古今書院，2009）に注目した。湯澤は結城紬産地では、家族内で高い技能を持つ者の仕事が円滑に運用できるよう、夫も含むそれ以外の家族成員がさまざまな仕事や家事を臨機応変に分担し合う「技能に規定された分業」が行われていることを明らかにした。この他に『家族・労働に及ぼす技術・経済的変化の影響－西陣の賃機の場合』（T.K.ハレブン，『思想』768，1988）、『織物工女の就業と家族経験－近代家族規範の検討』（木本喜美子，大原社会問題研究所，2012）を分析、検討した。
