本研究は、日本社会に暮らす、主としてベトナム、タイ、ミャンマー、ブラジルからの移民たちに焦点を当て、彼らのライフコースを解き明かすことを目的とした。これまでの移民研究では、居るべき場所／戻るべき場所としての「定住」を暗黙の前提にしたうえで、移民をナショナルな空間からの「逸脱者」とみなす視座を主流とする一方で、アイデンティティや主体性のあり方と密接な関連を持つ移民自身のライフコースについては十分に検討されてこなかった。本研究は、複数の国から日本にやってきた移民（技能実習生、留学生を含む）にインタビューを行い、若者から大人へと成長する人生の重要な時期（移行＝トランジション期）に国境を越えるという経験が、彼らのライフコース形成にどのような影響を及ぼしているのかを明らかにするものである。初年度にあたる当該年度（令和４年度）は、現在日本で暮らす移民たちが、どのように後期青年期の時期を過ごし（もしくはかつて過ごし）、そのプロセスにおいて、国境を越えた移動経験がどのような影響を及ぼしたかについて、主として①移民当事者、および日本語学校運営者への聞き取り調査、②国、および都道府県（千葉県）、市町村（八千代市）がそれぞれ公表するデータ収集と分析、③外国にルーツのある学生が多数在籍する高等教育機関（神田外語大学）が保有するデータ収集と分析、④移民とライフコース、トランジションに関連する先行研究の整理と精査、という４つの軸に沿った研究活動を実施した。
