日本に特異とされる和室の要素として、下足を脱いだユカ上での生活に基づく室機能の互換性の高さや、他室や屋外との連続性が指摘されているが、ユカ坐は世界的に分布するものであり、現代の日本の住様式は十分に相対化されていない。そこで本研究は、日本と同様の履床様式と起居様式を備え、かつ伝統的な住空間構成が日本とは異なり中庭型である韓国とインドを対象に、現代の住生活の類似・相違点を解明するものである。このことを通して、住戸内で下足を脱ぎ、時に裸足になって床上で生活する文化を「床上文化」として位置づけるとともに、和室を定義しうる知見を得ることを目指している。3カ国を比較する上で、母国の住生活のみでなく、母国から日本、あるいはアメリカ合衆国への環境移行に伴う対応を捉える点に特徴を有する。裸足で過ごすユカ坐が残る国、下足のままイス坐が中心の国という、異なる履床様式・起居様式下での対応を比較するのである。これにより、住環境の条件を揃えた比較ができるだけでなく、イス坐と併用し易いユカ坐の特性や、これを担保していよう下足を脱ぐ履床様式の継続性を明らかにできると考えた。初年度は、調査の方法と内容の確定を目的に、アメリカ合衆国ミズーリ州在住の研究協力者のサポートを得て、ミズーリ州在住の日本人を対象にオンラインにてインタビューによる予備調査を実施し、次の事項を捉えた。1つ目に、環境移行前後の履床様式・起居様式・姿勢（坐法）と床を用いる生活場面である。下足を脱ぐ履床様式は異国の配偶者との婚姻後も継続していること、起居様式は移住前からイス坐が中心であるが、ボードゲームや洗濯物をたたむ場面等ではユカ坐が継続していることが確認された。2つ目に、テレビとソファーの間を広く取ることでユカ坐のスペースを確保する設えが日本から継続していること、3つ目にユカ坐専用室への指向性には、家族のライフステージの影響も確認された。
