2022年度は、まず、本研究で研究対象とする城下町を選定した。本研究は、城下町間の比較分析に基づきその設計論理を解き明かすことを方法論の柱としていることから、比較分析の精度を高めるため、絵図や史料が一定程度整っている城下町を選定する必要がある。そこで、近世初期の1640年代に作成された正保城絵図が現存している城下町（63城下町）を対象に、それらを立地や地形、濠や水路の状況等の観点から類型化し、各類型を代表する城下町を選定した。具体的には、特に立地に着目し、「河岸段丘型」「扇状地型」「氾濫平野型」「臨海・湖畔型」に分類し、それぞれ数都市ずつ選定した。これにより、城下町の都市構造と立地（地形）との関係、さらに濠及び水路と立地（地形）との関係が明確となり、比較分析に基づき、それらが都市設計論理にどのような影響を及ぼしたのかを読み解くことができると考える。そのうえで、各研究対象城下町について、文献資料や考古学資料、絵図や旧版地図等の都市設計に係わる資料、関連調査や研究成果等を収集・整理するとともに、分析の最初期段階として、特に街路や水路等のインフラの整備過程に着目しながら、都市建設の過程を把握・整理した。さらに、設計論理を読み解くための既存の方法論を適用する際の必要資料の有無や代替資料の有無等について調査検討するとともに、特に、正保城絵図をはじめとする絵図を分析に使用する際の課題等について検討した。加えて、課題解決方策の一つとして、現代の地形データに基づき微地形図を作成し、それらの代替資料としての適用可能性について検討した。
