要援助者に対する洗髪の必要性と適切な頻度を明らかにする基礎研究として,19〜24歳の健康な男性8名を対象とし,安静臥床を要する入院患者を想定して,1週間洗髪を行わなかった場合の頭皮皮表の皮脂と細菌,および頭部の落屑量と自覚的不快感の経時的変化,ならびに洗髪の洗浄効果を測定し,以下のような知見を得た。1.トリグリセリドと遊離脂肪酸量(μg/cm^2)の経時的変化:遊離脂肪酸量は1回目の洗髪後24時間までトリグリセリド量より少ないが,48時間後に両者は近づき,72時間後には完全に逆転して遊離脂肪酸量が多くなり,167.5時間後までこの状態が続き,8日後2回目の洗髪直後には再度逆転してトリグリセリド量が多くなった.2.血液寒天培地,卵黄加マンニット食塩培地,GAM寒天培地のコロニー数(log_<10>/cm^2):1回目の洗髪後48時間まで急増した後、167.5時間後まで一定値となり,8日後2回目の洗髪直直後には著減した.卵黄加マンニット食塩培地のコロニーは全てコアグラーゼ陰性ブドウ球菌(CNS)であった.GAM寒天培地のコロニーでは,約7割が嫌気性菌であり,P.acnesは約3%であった.3.落屑量:1回目の洗髪直後0であり,167.5時間後まで経時的に増大し,8日後の洗髪直後に0となった.4.自覚的不快感:頭部の掻痒感・不潔感・べたつき感、悪臭・重い感覚は,1回目の洗髪直後は0となり,時間の経過とともに増大した.また2回目の洗髪によって,不潔感・べたつき感・悪臭・重い感覚は完全に消失したが,掻痒感は完全には消失しなかった。5.以上から,洗髪の洗浄効果が示されたが,8日後2回目の洗髪直後の皮脂量,細菌量,掻痒感は1回目の洗髪直後より多く,1週間間隔では頭部の汚れや不快感を完全には除去できないことが明らかとなった.
