本研究は、現行のコンピュータシステムにおいて眼精疲労を低減するディスプレイ方式の開発に関する基礎的な研究を行うことを目的としていた。このため本研究においては、文字の入力とともにカーソルの周りの一定領域のフォントのみを、適切な大きさに自動的に拡大表示するというディスプレイ方式をソフトウェアにて実現することを目指した。個々の使用者に最も見やすい型と大きさのフォントで拡大表示することにより眼の疲労を最小化するとともに、カーソルの移動に追随して次々と局所領域においてフォントの大きさが変わるために、眼の焦点調節機能が働き、眼精疲労が効果的に減少することが期待された。平成10年度においては、平成9年度の研究に引き続き、主要設備備品であるパーソナルコンピュータにおいて、カーソルの動きに追随してその周囲の一定の局所領域のフォントのみを、自動的に拡大表示するディスプレイシステムを、開発用ソフトウェアを用いて製作したが、平成10年度はシステムの改良を行い、いくつかの機能を設計・製作した。このとき、前田が主に設計を担当し、前田、鈴木が共同して製作を行った。平成10年度においては、本研究システムにおいて、フォントを拡大表示する局所領域の大きさをある範囲で選択可能な機能の開発を行った。更に、拡大表示するフォントの型および大きさをある程度まで選択可能とした。更に、文字の入力の時のみならず、既存の文書を読む際にも、同様にカーソルの周りの一定領域のフォントのみを、自動的に拡大表示するシステムを開発した。この機能の開発により、本研究システムの適用範囲が大幅に拡大された。現行のディスプレイ方式と本研究のディスプレイ方式との比較研究を行ったが、種々の制約により、本研究システムが実際に眼精疲労の低減にどこまで役立つかの検証まで行うことはできなかった。
