本研究は、知的障害者の「住まい」の保障形態について、その規模による相違に着目し、その規模がどのような機能をもたらしているか社会福祉学的に研究することを目的としてきた。なお事例による研究であり、仮説を導きだしてきた。「住まい」の規模を移行した障害者の事例検討から次の点が明らかにされた。1.大規模からより小規模への移行は、予想したとおり、より自由な生活の保障がめざされ、そうした結果が生じている。しかしそれに伴って、より小規模になるほど援助や条件整備もより手厚くなっていることが明らかにされた。それ故、大規模だから管理的で自由がない、とは必ずしも実証できた訳でもない。また自由な生活を求めて障害者がより小規模を選択する訳でもないことも明らかにされた。規模の問題は、必ずしも生活の自由と相関関係にないと仮説できる。2.他方、より小規模なほど障害者のまとまりが強く、そのまとまりをつくるために障害者が自律努力をしていること、より大規模なほど障害者の個々の要望が発揮され奔放であること、便利な生活が展開されていることも明らかにされた。これらは、規模が持っている共同生活、共同空間、共有資源の固有さとして考えられる。個の要望を実現していくための集団の多様さ、規模が備えなければならない共同空間や共有資源の多様さが相違を規定している。従って、規模の相違は、それが備えなければならない社会資源の固有さとそれがもつ機能を規定していると仮説できる。今後、規模によって類型化するための仮説にすることができる。
