项目摘要

本年度は風穴洞穴遺跡に重点をおいた発掘調査を行った。第1次調査でオオツノジカないしヘラジカの化石が確認された第4層を引き続き発掘した。大型哺乳動物としてはゾウの幼獣の大腿骨(ナウマンゾウの可能性が高い)、中型動物としてはアナグマ、ニホンザル、小型動物としてはニホンモグラジネズミが確認された。ゾウとニホンモグラジネズミは明らかに更新世絶滅動物であり、第4層はまぎれもなく更新世の地層であることが判明した。第4層の下に第5層を確認し、堆積がなお続いていることも明らかになった。しかし残念ながら、まだ、人骨と人工遺物の発見には至っていない。昨年度の調査で第4層から検出された哺乳動物化石の鑑定結果が愛知教育大学の川村善也助教授から報告されたが、確認された哺乳類は、シカ、サル、カモシカ、ウサギ、テン、ムササビ、モモンガ、エゾヤチネズミ、ハタネズミ、ヒメネズミ、ヤマネ、シント-トガリネズミ、モグラ属、コキクガシラコウモリ、テングコウモリ等、多種に及んでいる。このような第4層の動物組成は、当時の風穴洞穴周辺の環境が現在より寒冷で、より森林性に富んでいたことを物語っている。アバクチ洞穴については、昨年の調査区をさらに下層まで掘り下げ、第27層を確認した。24層までは少量の土器片と石器が確認されたが、それ以下は無遺物層となり、第27層に至ってようやく保存良好なクマの膝蓋骨と中手骨が検出された。現在、このクマの骨を用いた第27層の年代を測定中である。
