项目摘要

ヨーロッパ西縁に残る古代ケルト文化が現代社会の中でいかに残存し、いかに再生して変貌を遂げているか、またアメリカ、カナダに移住した人々を通して異国の地でどのような形で新たな文化を形成しているかを辿ろうとするものである。しかしながらアイルランド以外に地域と民族、特に北方のqケルト族すなわちスコットランドとマン島、それにpケルト族すなわちウエールズ、コーンウォール、ブルターニュ地方に対する考察が次年度の問題として残されている。そのなかで今年度の成果は、水之江有一および水之江郁子による8月スウェーデン、イエテボリ大学で開かれたアイルランド国際文学会における研究発表に始まり、多くの学会で研究成果を発表することが出来た。水之江有一は主にシェイマス・ヒ-ニ-を中心にした現代詩の領域を扱い、そのなかでケルトの神々が身近の人物となって登場することに触れる。また水之江郁子はウイリアム・トレヴァーを軸に小説の世界に踏み込み、″From Ambivalance to Acceptance Ireland and Britain in William Trevor″(Coming of Age:IASAI 1995,University College Cork,Ireland,1998),「「他者」との出会い--Postcolonialismとの関連で Margarct Atwood を読む」(日本カナダ文学会「カナダ文学研究」第6号、1997)、「周縁の沈黙とポリフォニ---ロバート・クローチとカナダ文化」(共立女子大学総合研究所、1998)となって現れた。なかでもフランス、ストラスブール大学でもよおされた国際学会「伝統の創造、脱中心的経験--スコットランド、アイルランド、カナダ」に招待され研究発表をし、パネルで多くの学者と意見を交換出来たことは有意義であった。このような経験と成果を踏まえて次年度はテーマをベルファーストに絞る。そこはケルト文化とイギリス帝国主義のせめぎあう地であり、文化的にも無視できないからである。
