本年度の取り組みでは、研究テーマの前史と背景に関わる基本的史実の解明と、国内・国外史料の調査に重点を置いた。まず年度前期は、天理大学附属天理図書館と尊経閣文庫所蔵の関連欧文史料の影印本を収集し、これらを手がかりとして、イエズス会の日本再布教計画に関わる記事の分析を進めた。その結果、一部のフランドル出身イエズス会士が進めた再布教計画の諸段階、それに影響を与えたと見られる海域アジア情勢と日本情報のほか、彼らの日本に対する心性の一端が明らかになった。続いて年度後期は、国内・海外所在の史料調査をおこなった。国内では東洋文庫と横浜開港資料館を訪問し、17－18世紀アジア布教史関連の刊行史料を閲覧した。主たる調査成果として、18世紀前期の史料群から日本・ベトナムの女性信徒の生涯と殉教を讃えたユニークな作品を見出したこと、そしてそれが世界的に現存数の少ない稀覯本であると判明したことが挙げられる。海外調査ではローマ・イエズス会文書館所蔵の原文書、ポルトガルのアジュダ図書館所蔵の写本史料集成を調査対象とした。両機関での調査を通じて収集した史料の分析から、17世紀後期のベトナム布教をめぐるイエズス会とパリ外国宣教会との競合状況、それに対するローマ教皇庁の対応、イエズス会ベトナム布教の擁護に向けた現地信徒の証言、フィリピンから極東進出を狙う托鉢修道会の動きが明らかになりつつある。さらに本年度は、角川文化振興財団主催のシンポジウム、キリシタン文化研究会大会などに参加することで、研究課題の関連テーマおよび研究の途中経過を発表し、国内外の研究者との学術交流にも努めた。現在、その発表内容に基づく論文の執筆を進めている。
