中部地方の中央構造線付近の領家帯の地質調査を行い、長野県南信濃村と静岡県水窪町の境界に位置する青崩峠付近の中央構造線の破砕帯が逆断層センスの剪断構造を持つことを発見した。この破砕帯の露頭(青崩峠露頭)直下において土留工事が行われており、中央構造線の運動史を解明する上で重要な露頭が失われる可能性が高かったので当初の調査予定の範囲を青崩峠周辺のみに絞って重点的に調査した。青崩峠露頭の西部には、変質した石英閃緑岩起源のマイロナイトとその角礫を含む断層破砕帯があり、破砕帯の東側には厚さ約1mの断層ガウジをはさんでドレライトが産出する。ドレライトのK-Ar全岩年代は142±9Maであった(テレダインアイソトープス社による)。ドレライトの下面から変質マイロナイト角礫を含む断層破砕帯の上面までの間の断層ガウジ帯が西南日本の内帯と外帯の物質境界としての中央構造線である。断層ガウジ帯の露頭全体を通してみた平均的な走向傾斜は、N5°E70°Eである。中央構造線の下盤側(西側)にある変質マイロナイト、縞状破砕帯、および黒色破砕帯は、断層ガウジ帯の近傍を除いて、大局的には南北走向で60から70度西に傾斜した面に沿って配列している。中央構造線は、この破砕帯群の構造を切っている。変質マイロナイトの表面に認められる条線の姿勢と破砕帯の縞状構造を変位させている小剪断面の解析結果から、中央構造線の上盤側(東側)を相対的に上昇させるようなセンスの逆断層運動があったことがわかった。赤石山地の他の中央構造線露頭においてもこれと類似した、小規模な逆断層が存在するので、逆断層運動は局地的なものではなく、赤石山地の中央構造線全体にわたって起こっていたと考えられる。
