本研究の成果には、(1)文法現象の記述(データベースの構築と整理による)と(2)文法理論への貢献(データの分析・理論的整理による)の2つの側面がある。(1)は、新たな研究対象を確定したことである。「太郎たち学生が来た。」のような文の「太郎たち」のように、名詞句(学生)の前に助詞なしで置かれてその名詞と同格的になる「同格構造」の存在を指摘し、そのような構造になるものを作り出す要素には、複数接辞(「たち」「ら」)、並列表現(「とか」「だの」「なり」)、列挙表現(「など」)があること、その延長上に列挙開始指標(「のほか」「以外」)、並列述語(「たり」「とか」「なり」)、さらに間接疑問節、引用節などがあることが明らかになった。これらの要素の記述的な特質として、(a)品詞分類を越えて非常に似た構造を作ること、(b)構造的には似た形になる数量詞遊離や2次述語構文とは主名詞との関係が「集合定義的」であるか「叙述的」であるかという点で異なることが指摘された。これを受けて(2)の理論面では(d)日本語の名詞句の構造にもう一つの型を認め記述する必要があることが示唆された。この構造は従来の名詞句の上位の位置、つまり英語などでいう冠詞(決定詞)の位置にあたるものを仮定することで説明ができるが、従来の分析ではこの位置は日本語には存在しないとするものが多かった。また、(e)これらの表現が引用や間接疑問に近い振る舞いをして述語による選択制限を受けたり、「例示」「選択」といった文脈に密着した概念と結び付いていたりすることを一般化し、名詞句の解釈手順の一つの枠組みが示唆された。具体的には個々の要素から集合を作り出す「集合定義的」な手順と、すでにある集合から要素を選び出し数え上げや属性付与をする「叙述的」な手順の間にこれらの表現の意味的な特質があることが明らかになった。
