研究実績の内容として、大韓帝国期における文字とナショナリズムの問題に焦点を当てた。大韓帝国の成立により、国家像に相応しい文字とは何か。また、どのような議論や論争が行われたのかを明らかにした。この問いに対して、書家でありながら政治家でもあり、民族運動など多方面で活躍した呉世昌〔1864-1953〕を研究対象とした。発表者はこれまで、呉世昌による書物である『書之鯖』（1901年）に現れる歴史観が、大韓帝国の成立による「中華」の継承意識と密接に関わることを検証してきた。さらに、殷商の青銅器の金文や甲骨文を取り入れた彼の書の作品は、「箕子崇拝」という中華文明の継承者としての意識と朝鮮民族の自意識（近代的なナショナリズム）が共存していたことを指摘した。これらの成果を踏まえたうえで、さらに視野を広げ、大韓帝国期に起きた議論を収集し、ハングルと漢字それぞれの優劣性についての言論を観察する。具体的には、『万歳報』、『大韓民報』、『皇城新聞』、『大東学会月報』などの新聞を観察の対象とし、文字と国家像の関係に対する議論を考察した。研究の重要性として、これまでの先行研究は、大韓帝国と文字ナショナリズムを考える際に、ハングルは容易に朝鮮民族の固有性や属性に結び付けられ、漢字との二元対立の関係として扱われる。しかし、儒教の価値観に深く影響される呉世昌にとって、書き言葉としての漢字は、単純に「他者」の文字ではなかったのである。特に重要なのは、彼にとって「中国」は不変な存在ではないからという点である。特に近代朝鮮において、漢字とナショナリズムの問題を考えるのに、明王朝から「正統中華」を継承する大韓帝国が成立した際に、明・清交替からもたらされた影響も考慮せねばならない。そして、華夷思想において「正統中華」を継承する資格として、箕子が重要な役割を果たしているのである。
