研究初年度は、1950年代以来アルチュセールの思考のうちに一貫して存在する「歴史」の問題系との関連において、60年代前半の「マルクス主義哲学」＝「理論的実践の〈理論〉」をめぐる探究の実践的意義を明らかにすることを試みた。研究員は第一に、50年代のアルチュセールの思考を辿ることで、「認識論的切断」の問題系がいかなる実践的モチーフの中で練り上げられたのかを検討した。特に55-56年の「歴史哲学の諸問題」講義を読解することで、従来の歴史哲学に対する史的唯物論の革新性が、超歴史的規範によってではなく「歴史自身によって歴史を認識する」ことに認められていることを確認した。このように歴史が自己自身に関係するための有機的媒介として「理論」を捉える視座は、注意深く読んでみると、60年代前半の著作のうちにも通底していることが明らかになった。この観点から『マルクスのために』におけるレーニン論の意義を理解することができた（史的唯物論が対象とする「構造」とは、超歴史的本質ではなく、現実の特異な歴史的状況の理論的把握を可能にする「不変項」＝「状況の構造」である）。さらに研究員は、『資本論を読む』（特にアルチュセールの二論文とバリバールの論文）を読解し、生産様式間の「移行」をめぐる議論を、60年代前半のアルチュセールの試みの理論的帰結として位置づけた。アルチュセールにとって、マルクスがもたらした「理論」（資本主義的生産様式の概念）と現実の歴史的状況の齟齬をイデオロギー的に解消してしまう「経験主義」に抗して、理論と実践の関係を並行論的に理解する「哲学」こそが、そのような現実の捕まえがたさをひるがえって「理論」自身の空虚として把握可能にするものであった。すなわちこの「哲学」こそが、人間が理論的かつ実践的に「自らの時代を飛び越す」ことを禁じるイデオロギーに抗して、「移行の諸形式の理論」の発展可能性を開くものであったのだ。
