地方文書の調査のために、長野県と沖縄県を訪問した。長野県では、飯田市で調査を行い、在村知識人である江戸後期の平栗墨翁日記を求め、現在その解読に当たっている。この日記は19世紀初頭から前半にかけての膨大な日記であり、日常の記事の他に、墨翁の文化的活動や、時事の動静、それに対する墨翁のコメントが記されている。墨翁は国学者であると同時に儒学者との交流があり、近隣の子弟の教育活動も行っている。申請者が従来研究してきた儒学知とのかかわりの点でも、在村文化の広がりと内容の点でも興味深い史料と見ている(当地では、例えば松尾亨庵との交流が記され、また大塩平八郎事件への言及がある)。沖縄県では、県立図書館等で地元の市町村史誌類を閲覧し、先行研究論文にも当たったが、民衆の文字文化そのものの痕跡がほとんど見られなかった。民衆は口伝や口承による文化にあって、文字文化は支配文化と直結していたものと考えられる。スミナラヤ-といわれる、手習塾に当たるものは、支配の末端を担う人々を育成する機関であった。従来は文字文化を通じて民衆教育の近代化の前提を模索してきた申請者であるが、それに縛られない民衆の文化的なあり方から問題を再考する必要を痛感した。同時に、その中からどのような新しい文化が創造されたのか、現在のところは史料的限界によって明らかにすることはできない。引き続き調査したいと考えている。
