本研究は古墳への被葬者の埋葬に関連して執り行われた祭祀の実態とその系譜について研究したものである。まず、5世紀初めの兵庫県行者塚古墳における西側造出での発掘成果に検討を加えた結果、墳丘側に家形埴輪を置き、その前で高杯形土器と篭目土器に土製の供物を載せて捧げる行為が行われていたことが明らかになった。とくに家形埴輪は復原作業によって、墳頂部同様、十個近くの各形態のものが一定の範囲に整然と配置されていたことがわかった。この造出での土製供物を捧げる祭祀は行者塚古墳とほぼ同時代の兵庫県クワンス塚古墳、奈良県乙女山古墳や5世紀後半の群馬県舞台1号墳でも確認できる。この祭祀行為が初期人物埴輪群が表しているものと考えられる。次にこの種の古墳祭祀の系譜を探ってみた。すると4世紀後半の京都府作山1号墳、同溝谷1号墳などで同様の祭祀が古墳の墳頂で実施されていたことが知られた。さらに岐阜県長塚古墳に見られる墓壙内埋土中の赤色顔料が塗布された土器も同様な行為に用いられたものと考えられた。なお、作山1号墳ではその出土状況の分析により、かねてより注目されていた犬や猪などの動物形の土製品は、供献行為の行われた地点とは離れて、家形埴輪と一緒に出土していることが判明した。したがって、5世紀後半以後、島根県石屋古墳などで見られるような各種形象埴輪群は、始めから別次元の祭祀や場面を同時に表している可能性が強くなった。たとえば、供献祭祀の場面に加え、被葬者の来世での姿などが複合的に表されていると考えられるのである。なお、5世紀に各地で現れる人形、鏡形、盾形といった土製模造品は古墳とは関連がなく、大地や自然に対する祭りに用いられたものであることが確認された。
