1 土器棺墓の事例の集成は、刊行されている調査報告書類を中心におこないつつ、調査中の事例などについても、出来るだけデータの収集につとめた。その結果、西日本全体で約200遺跡、1100基以上の事例を集成することができた。この数値は、報告者が平成4年度におこなった集成(約100遺跡、350基以上)と比較して、遺跡数で2倍、事例数では3倍以上という値となり、土器棺墓資料が急速に増加している現状をみてとることができた。2 西日本における土器棺墓の出現は、近畿地方では中期末、中国地方では後期前葉である。九州では後期初頭の事例が1例あるものの、安定して存在するのは後期後葉以降である。西日本を全体としてみれば、東に古く、西にゆくに従い新しくなるという時間的傾斜を示しており、他の文化要素の動態も勘案すれば、東日本で成立・展開した風習の伝播が出現の契機となったと捉えられる。3 晩期に流行する合口あるいは合蓋の土器棺の初源的な事例は、後期後葉の九州に求められる。近畿地方では空白期であった後期後葉の土器棺墓が発見されてきており、後期と晩期の断絶は埋まりつつあるけれども、西日本の本州地域における合口・合蓋土器棺の出現は、現状では後期まで遡らない。合口・合蓋土器棺は、九州地方から東へ伝播した可能性が高いと考えている。4 土器棺墓は、一般に乳児や小児用の埋葬容器と考えられてきた。しかし再葬であることを示す焼けた人骨や成人骨が土器の中に納められていた事例が増加しつつある。晩期に、土器棺墓が流行する背景に、再葬風習の存在を考慮する必要がある。ただし、新生児が土器に納められていた良好な晩期の事例も発見されており、成人再葬用と未成人用が区別できるのか、墓域の中の位置や土器棺型式から追求することが今後の課題である。
