本研究では、CNNの「ラリー・キング・ライブ」を利用して、そのオープンキャプション(同時英語字幕放送)の文字データをコンピュータで処理可能なデータベースに構築し、現代口語英米語における語法の特徴を明らかにすることを計画した。しかし、研究の過程において、文字データをキャプションデコーダを用いてコンピュータに自動入力することが技術的に困難であること、及び、文字データ自体が、実際の発話内容と異なっている箇所が少なからずあることが判明し、聞き取りと並行しながらのキーボード入力を余儀なくされることになった。具体的な研究の対象としては、「同義表現」「補文標識」「否定表現」を取り上げ、その語法上の特徴を探った。「同義表現」に関しては、as if as thoughに関して調査したが、語法上の顕著な違いは認められなかった。「補文標識」に関しては、従属節を作るthat節のthatの出現の有無について調査した。主節にI thinkやI guessのような一人称主語、認識的動詞が来る場合には、それがひとまとまりとなって「主観性の標識」として機能するためにthatの出現はほとんど見られなかったが、従属節がbecauseやifで始まる場合には、thatの出現が見られた。「否定表現」に関しては、いわゆる「否定辞繰り上げ」現象について調査した。否定辞繰り上げを許す述語動詞が主節に用いられている場合、否定辞が従属節内に留まっている実例は全体の1割に満たなかった。
