本研究ではまず、トーマス・マンのテキスト中の「換喩」を抽出する作業をコンピュータ・データベースを利用して行なった。主な対象は同時代的小説『魔の山』、『ファウストゥス博士』の2作である。具体的手順は:1)作品全体から換喩的表現と思われるものを抽出し、九州大学大型計算機センター所蔵のトーマス・マン・データベースにより検索をおこなう。2)実際に換喩機能をもちうる語句を含む文を、パソコンのデータベースとして蓄積する。各文は語句ごとに区分して集められ一つのファイルとなるが、異なった語句の下に分類された文も、別の基準でも検索できるようになっている。ついで上のデータベースをもとに、トーマス・マンのテキストの換喩の分類とその機能の考察を行なった。ただし得られた資料の量が多く分類の最終形を提出するには至らないが、マンのテキストには場所・所属・部分などの関係に基づく標準的な換喩の他に、テキスト内部の非標準的関連付けではじめて結びつく、観念連合的換喩が実に多く現れることが確認できた。そして例えば『魔の山』の場合、それらは「病気・死・放縦」対「健康・性・市民性」といったよく知られている思想面でのマクロな構造を、具体的ではあるが多くは偶然的ないし瑣末的とも言える事象・形象のモザイクに置き換えており、このことが、テキストを仮に内容と文体に二分した場合の文体的部分の性質を非常に強力に規定するものとなっている。そしてこのことはまた、実はそのまま、マンのテキストのイロニ-性という、むしろ「内容」に関わる部分に密接に関連する。換喩の多用は、視点の「近さ」を極力排除して、「死と生」などという対立の重さを言語的に転換するのに充分な力を発揮しているが、その転換が単に形式的でないところに、思想という観点で追うだけでは見えにくいマンのテキストの特性があると考えられるのである。
