It must be grasped what environmental resources exist in a river basin to preserve the fine nature and to create the comfortable living environment, However, it is difficult to think effectively about methods of environmental creation to preserve and utilize the environmental resources in such big rivers as the Yodo River runs through the metropolitan area because of urban problems. The environmental information system is asked to analyze and evaluate the relation between the urban activities and the environmental resources, and to support the planning and design. The investigators have been developing an environmental information system to grasp and analyze the regional landscape structure for the first step. The environmental information system deals with a wide area, based on a small-scale map drawn on a scale of 1 : 200,000 or a scale of 1 : 25,000. This system is combined with a commercially available geographic information system (GIS), CAD/CG system, database management (DBM) system, and databases to. visualize the regional information in the lower reaches of Yodo River, Japan. It is emphasized that a three-dimensional representation of the digital terrain model has been generated. The visualized data can be imported and exported among some application programs using a standard CAD data format. Thus, CG techniques such as texture mapping can be used easily. Consequently, the system expands the visualization of the regional information in cooperation with some platforms.
