本研究の目的は、対日直接投資がなぜ世界で最も低水準にとどまっているのかを解明することにある。本研究では、対内直接投資の研究に、データ・サイエンスの分野で開発の進んでいる機械学習の手法を取り入れる。具体的には、グラビティ・モデルの分析に、機械学習の手法を導入する。初年度である2022年度は本格的な機械学習の分析に入る前段階として、文献のレビューとデータの整備に力を注いだ。対内直接投資のデータは経済開発協力機構（OECD）から得た。グラビティ・モデルの変数はフランスの研究機関であるCEPIIから得た。また、その他のコントロール変数として、税や為替レートなど、これまでの文献で用いられてきた変数だけでなく、政府債務比率や高齢者比率など、これまでのグラビティ・モデルでは用いられていない投資受入国のマクロ経済状況を示す変数を利用する。これらのデータは先のOECDとCEPIIに加え、国際通貨基金（IMF）や世界銀行（World Bank）の発表するデータから得た。またデータの整備を進める一方で、対内直接投資のグラビティ・モデルの理論モデルの整理、および予備的な分析としてベイズモデル平均化法による分析を行った。この目的は、機械学習で得られる結果とその他の方法で得られる結果に大きな違いが生じないかどうかを確認するための作業である。
