本研究では、従来のグラビティ・モデルに貿易創出と貿易転換の各効果の大きさを把握するためのダミー変数を導入し、戦後の地域経済統合の動きが世界貿易に与えた影響を分析した。まず、既存の地域統合機構であるEEC、LAFTA、そしてCMEAを分析対象とした研究では、以下のことが明らかとなった。域外貿易に関しては、(1)EECは当初は域外貿易の水準が予測よりも高かったが、その後低下した。(2)LAFTAは当初から域外貿易が少なかったが、このような輪出・輸入転換効果はLAFTAにおける統合の進展と共に大きくなった。(3)CMEAは逆に当初は大きな輸出・輪入貿易転換効果が観察されていたが、その後対外貿易転換効果は弱まる傾向を見せた。域内貿易に関しては、(1)EECは当初は域内貿易創出効果が高かったが、その効果は1970年代から80年代前半にかけて低下し、最近になってまた回復している。(2)LAFTAは逆に当初は域内貿易は低調であったが、1980年代の経済停滞期を除けばその後拡大している。(3)CMEAは戦後一貫して域内貿易創出効果を高めていったが、活動停止直前期には域内貿易水準が落ちている。次に、新たな地域経済統合の動きが見られるアジア太平洋地域を分析対象とした研究では、以下のことが明らかとなった。(1)貿易関係の緊密さから判断すれば、発足当初のAPECは適切なグルーピングではなかった。(2)ASEANは加盟国間の貿易活動を押し上げる追加的な効果を持っていない。(3)アジア太平洋地域には、EAECとAPECという2段階の貿易創出地域がある。(4)アジア地域内の貿易活動水準は1960年代からすでに通常の世界貿易の水準よりも高かった。(5)環太平洋地域における貿易増加に中心的な役割を果たしたのはEAECである。
