本研究課題の目的は、児童養護施設が、虐待・ネグレクトなどの逆境的幼少期体験の影響からの回復を促進する機能を担っているのかどうかについて検証することである。逆境的幼少期体験は、脳の(逆境に対する)適応的変化を引き起こし、生涯にわたって精神症状や行動問題などを高めてしまうリスク因子であることが知られている。児童養護施設での生活が逆境的体験の影響からの回復を促進する機能を担っているという仮説が妥当であるならば、子どもの個別のニーズに応じて養育できる専門性を持った養育者のいる児童養護施設での質の高いケアが、脳の(安全安心に対する)適応的変化を再び引き起こし、過去の逆境的体験というリスク因子の影響を抑制するかもしれない。日本の「新しい社会的養育のビジョン」などの政策において、特に、思春期の子どもが生活する児童養護施設の養育機能に関する科学的根拠の蓄積が必要とされる中で、本研究取り組みは学術的かつ社会的に意義深いものであり、「すべての人に健康と福祉を」などのSDGs(持続可能な開発目標)の達成にも貢献するものである。当該年度においては、研究代表者の異動によって研究協力体制が変化した。ただし、児童精神科医として1年間勤務したことで、鹿児島県内にある児童養護施設に入所中の子どもたちの診察をする機会が多数あった。それによって、鹿児島県における不適切養育に対するケアの現状や、児童養護施設での課題などを把握することができた。
