本研究では、エキスパート外科医（特に日本肝胆膵外科学会の高度技能専門医や日本内視鏡外科学会の技術認定のような専門性の高い、高次専門医）に必要な資質・能力（コンピテンシー）の評価方法として“ EPA (Entrustable Professional Activities) ”の概念を用いて評価する方法を立案するものである。Delphi法を用いてエキスパート外科医を目指す修練医を指導する指導者間の意識統合を行い、エキスパート外科医に必要なコンピテンシーを明らかにしたのち、そのコンピテンシーを評価するためのEPAを用いた評価方法を考案し、その評価法の妥当性・信頼性および実現可能性についても検証することを計画している。2022年度はこれまでの先行研究および海外で使用されるコンピテンシーについてドキュメント調査を行った。具体的には文献検索や情報収集を行い、エキスパート外科医に必要なコンピテンシーを抽出し、研究協力者を募って、初期リスト作りのための協議を行ってきた。またエキスパート外科医の実務の調査として診療や実際の手術について、自施設のみならず他施設での実態についても調査・見学し、その状況について分析をおこなった。一方、教育分野においてEPAは比較的新しい概念であり、その解釈には十分な理解が必要と感がられるが、2022年7月26日に医学教育振興財団が主催する指導者フォーラムにおいて、EPAを提唱したOlle ten Cate氏の講演が開催されたため、その内容を聴講した。全国の医学教育学者ともEPAの在り方については直接議論を重ねることもできた。
