春から中央アジアの環境問題に関する歴史学・文献学的研究の整理に着手した。帝政ロシア期から始まり、ソ連時代における大規模開発(灌漑水路の整備・ダム建設・綿花栽培など)とそれによる環境変動への影響について既往研究を再検討した。具体的にはソ連時代の公式史観に基づく研究だけでなく、近年に現われた欧米諸国・日本と現地の研究者たちとの共同作業による調査報告書についても分析した。夏休みの帰還を利用し、当初の計画通りにウズベキスタンに赴き、現地調査を実施した。ウズベキスタン科学アカデミーの研究者と共にアム河流域とシル河の上流地点で考察した。具体的にはフェルガーナ盆地に入り、中央アジアの複数の大河の水源地を探査した。ダムと水路の整備と建設、それに沿線の村落と都市興亡及び現地住民の生活について聞き書きをおこなった。その後、アム河に沿って下り、コーカンドとブハラまでを踏査した。文明が始まって以来の水を利用した遺跡が多く分布し、現在まで繁栄が続いている。そうした河川沿線の都市と村落で近世における帝政ロシアへの編入と抵抗、ソ連時代の大規模工事の出現について資料を集めた。また、アム河の水を西のトルクメニスタンへ引く分水地点まで調査し、沙漠地帯における綿花栽培と資源開発の実態、環境変動に関するデータを収集した。日本に帰ってからは引き続き欧米の最新研究の成果を集めつつ、現地から入手した資料との比較研究を進めた。
