本研究は、19世紀初頭に登場したのち200年をかけて発達した近代的な欧文書体であるサンセリフ体を整理し、各時代における技術革新や用途の変化、およびデザイナーの工夫や新たなコンセプトによる形状の変化を把握することにより、デジタル・メディアにおける理想的なフォントのかたちを探ることを目指している。当該年度はまず、①これまでの調査の蓄積をもとに、19世紀における印刷産業の発展とサンセリフ体の発達の関係をたどり、宣伝広告や見出しとしての用途を目的としたディスプレイ書体としての形状の変化を明らかにした。また、②20世紀前半から米国で大きく発達したファッション誌などの大衆情報誌を中心とするエディトリアルを含むグラフィックデザインへのサンセリフ体の導入の過程を、デザイナーの活動を中心に取り上げて調査した。さらに、③活字から写植・フィルムへの技術転換が本格化する1960・70年代の米国の状況に着目し、ITC（インターナショナル・タイプフェイス・コーポレーション）社における制作内容を探るとともに、主催したハーブ・ルバリン（Herb Lubalin, 1918-81）を中心としたデザイナーたちの関係と制作した書体を追った。その上で、編集者ラルフ・ギンズバーグ（Ralph Ginzburg, 1929-2006）の依頼によって実現した『アヴァン・ギャルド』誌（1968-71）の専用ディスプレイ書体となった象徴的なサンセリフ体Avant Garde Gothicを対象として、リガチャー（合字）を手がけたトム・カーネイズ（Tom Carnase, 1939-）の活動とあわせて、その成立過程と背景を探るとともに書体デザインの特徴を確認した。
