本研究は、明治期以降から現代までの絵画の教育制度と関わって、自己の身体にたいする認識の問題を提起したものである。美術科には「顔(自画像)」や「手」を描く、作るという主題があるが、それをこれまで身体認識と重ねあわせて真に捉えた研究は少ない。そこで現在の学校教育での身体の扱われ方を調査し、その背景を探るなかで、このような表現のもつ現況とその意義、可能性について再考察を行ってきた。二年間にわたって行われた調査の対象は以下の項目である。1、小、中、高等学校の生徒や大学生、一般人が「自己の身体」をいかに認識しているか意識調査2、筑波大学、東京芸術大学、国立大学教育学部、私立大学美術系大学などのカリキュラムにおける「身体」との関連性の現況3、上記の項目に関わって、とりわけ「裸体画」の歴史的背景や大学カリキュラムでの現況調査4、「身体」にかかわる教科書、教援書、人体表現に関する文献などの資料整理5、これまでの美術や美術教育とかかわってきた「裸体」や「人体」の史的研究6、医学に用いられる「人体解剖図譜」、献体解剖による人体構造などの歴史を、上記の3と重ね合わせることによる、「身体」認識の社会背景の関する考察絵画制作者の立場から行われた本研究は、現在措定されている研究領域間の連動性、新たな教科構造への展開の手掛かりを得ることも考えた。そのため狭義の「美術作品」のみならず、児童画や人体解剖図譜などの身体を表現した作品資料を多岐にわたって調査してきた。それは逆に研究計画での初期の提示状況以上に多くの時間と経費を要するものであったが、本研究によって明らかになった問題も多数ある。例えば現在の大学美術科の絵画や彫刻の講義では、全国的に通年の約半数を身体表現に費やし、しかもそれが限られた年齢、性別、授業内容のなかで展開されている点。また現在の子供たちが描いた「身体」が、言語構造や対象に対する「客観的」な見方によって扱われていることなどである。アンケートや作品資料から収集された多くの文献資料は、今後の研究にも大変に貴重なものとなった。そしてこのような内容は、学会誌、大学紀要などの論文を通じて発表したり、「身体」を表現した自己の作品を展示することで提起した。「身体」は、文化、芸術、教育とも密接に関わるものである。そのため本研究が、今後とも美術教科における「表現」と「鑑賞」の関係を再構築し、さらには美術を他領域と重ねあわせて連動性のある教科構造をつくっていく手掛かりとして、重要な意義を担うものになったと確信している。
