Networking in the Indian Ocean Region

课题组初步提出了以下目标：1.从球面和上下文的角度描述印度洋地区的独特性; 2.为该区域建立海洋和陆地方面的分析框架;评估全球化对民族、种族、地方或群体特征的影响，并展望该区域的未来，在这些主要目标下，开展了以下活动：阐明工商界和银行界之间网络化的显著特点; 2.开展理论事业;收集关于南亚散居者的原始材料，该小组的成果包括出版了三份讨论文件。它们是《南亚移民社群-各阶段》（1999年）、《日本的南亚移民社群的历史和活动》（1999年）和《跨越国界-南亚移民社群和东道国社会》。另外，东京大学出版社将在几年内出版《世界体系与网络》一书，该小组还组织了题为《人口流动研究》的国际研讨会（1998年）和关于南亚“民族国家”和跨国力量的国际会议（2000年），特别是第二届会议（《穿越世界：媒体与南亚》）除此之外，该小组还在日本基金会组织的两次会议上作了几次公开演讲，并收集了关于南亚散居者的资料。

The research team proposed the following objectives initially :1. to describe the distinctive features of Indian Ocean region from spherical and contextual points of view,2. to build an analytical framework for the region in the contexts of sea and land, and3. to assess the impact of globalization upon the identities of nation, ethnicity, locality, or group and to have prospects on the future of the region.Under these primary objectives the following activities were launched :1. to clarify the conspicuous features of networking among the business and banking communities,2. to launch theoretical undertakings, and3. to collect source material on South Asian Diaspora.The products of the team, among others, have been the publication of three discussion papers. They are South Asian Diaspora - Its Phases [1999], History and Activities of South Asian Migrant Communities in Japan [1999], and Crossing Borders - South Asian Diaspora and Host Societies. Another book titled The World System and Networking is to be published in a few years from the University of Tokyo Press.The team also organized the international conference-seminar titled Studies on Population Movement Comparatives Studies on South Asian Migration (1998) and the International Conference on The 'Nation-State' and Transnational Forces in South Asia (2000), especially the second session (Crossing the Spheres : Media and South Asia). Besides these the team gave several public lectures in the two sessions organized by the Japan Foundation, and collected sources on South Asian Diaspora.
