MeDi is a project that aims to give a new perspective on the dynamics of integration of minorities as a result of forced migration. Thanks to the collaboration with the supervisor Prof. Mary Laven, Professor in Early Modern History and Fellow at Jesus College in Cambridge, expert in social and cultural history of early modern Italy and Europe, I would like to improve my academic career proposing this innovative research which proposes some very topical themes. By comparing the diasporas of the Albanians and the Gypsies between XV and XVIII centuries, that brought them from the Byzantine Empire to the Kingdom of Naples, the research intends to analyse these parallel movements, which led to completely different dynamics of inclusion and exclusion, access to contrasting privileges and concessions, and a permanence in southern Italy that still retains some of the characteristics of that first interaction. These two minorities were chosen because they maintain some common features useful for a comparison that can offer a cross-sectional look at the history of migrations and open new points of reflection. With an interdisciplinary approach that interacts with linguistic, anthropology, history of art and psychology of the migration I will problematise on the traditional representation of these two nations by first analysing the extensive bibliography, then I will document the continuity of these presences and their interactions with the host population through in-depth archive research (Valladolid, Madrid, Naples, Cosenza). Using these documents I will investigate and compare how these minorities kept their ethnic identity, and finally I will return the research making their findings public and accessible using an Open Access Methodology. Beyond the scholarly value, the project will produce and disseminate alternative narrative history on migrations in the Mediterranean that is so necessary in this period, but also in Gender studies that are full part of this research.
