The performance-wear sector of the fashion industry, covering product lines like outdoorwear and swimwear, currently relies on materials like Gore-tex and nylon for their mechanical performance which are environmentally harmful and shed microplastics. Any alternative must be able to outperform them mechanically.Our project is to use BioHastalex, a fully tested polymer made from the emerging material graphene, to create fibres for application in a performance-wear pilot. BioHastalex is extremely strong, flexible, light and breathable, moreso than any other material currently commercially available. It is biodegradable in seawater/landfill and can also be recycled back to its solution form for re-use.
