Air quality is rapidly becoming one of the biggest societal challenges of our time. Outdoor air pollution is well known to be harmful to human health and is thought to have cost the NHS and social care in England over £157 million in 2018\. Indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than the air outside as a result of the emission of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), Particulate Matter (PM), Nitrogen Oxides, Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide and Ozone from numerous sources in the home.In this project, the collaborative team will develop and test an innovative platform to monitor and visualise indoor air quality. The platform will help households manage indoor air quality through an easy-to-use and intuitive smart phone application or website. Building on arbnco's innovative indoor environmental monitoring system 'arbn well', the platform will monitor the levels of key pollutants, such as PM and VOCs, in the domestic environmental and provide actionable recommendations to householders to mitigate the health impacts of long term exposure to these pollutants. The project is led by arbnco in collaboration with Mitsubishi Electric, Energy Systems Catapult, University of Strathclyde, Modulous and SNRG .arbnco is an innovative SME developing digital solutions for the built environment. arbnco's award-winning indoor environmental monitoring solution, arbn well, provides the underlying hardware and software technology for the proposed system. The University of Strathclyde's Professor Sharpe is a leading international expert on indoor air quality and its impact on health. His team will provide expertise and experience in monitoring domestic pollution.Energy Systems Catapult is an independent, not-for-profit centre of excellence that bridges the gap between industry, government, academia and research. The Catapult's Living Lab facility of 200 connected smart-homes will be used to test the solution in a real-world environment.Mitsubishi Electric Corporation is a multinational electronics and electrical equipment manufacturing company. They are a major manufacturer of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditions (HVAC) systems and domestic Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVRH) systems. Supported by Mitsubishi Electric, the project will demonstrate the integration of air quality monitoring with Mitsubishi's range of domestic ventilation systems.Modulous and SNRG are at the forefront of developing new approaches to sustainable and affordable homes. To optimise energy efficiency the design of these homes incorporates a high-degree of air tightness and therefore monitoring the indoor environment is of critical importance. The project will explore routes-to-market with Mitsubishi, Modulous and SNRG.
