项目摘要

2022年度は、近年急速に精度を高め一般に定着しつつある機械翻訳を視野に入れ、中・上級英語学習者であっても取り扱いの難しいエラーが機械翻訳によってどの程度まで解消されるのか、解消されない場合はどのような指導が必要になるのかを研究した。具体的には、本研究者による複数形態素“-s”の欠落に関する研究（西谷・中﨑・ダンテ, 2017; 西谷・中﨑, 2022）を基盤として、機械翻訳が“-s”の欠落をどの程度まで予防し得るのかを分析した。結果として、①人名詞、有情物名詞、非情物名詞が総称を意味する場合と複数マーカーと共起する場合は複数性がほぼ正確に再現される一方で、②それらの名詞類が不定の複数を意味する場合は名詞の種類や文脈によって複数性の再現にブレが見受けられることが明らかになった。これらの結果は、機械翻訳を使用する場合であっても、使用者本人が個々の名詞の数を判断しなくてはならないということを示唆する。これらを踏まえた対応策のひとつは、機械翻訳が既出の名詞の複数性を後続の語句に正確に反映させることを利用して、日本語では単純形でも問題のない初出の名詞について、その数を明示する表現をあえて使用することである。ただし、英語の総称と不定の複数に内在する複数性は、それらを単純形で表す日本語母語話者には認識しにくいものである。そのため、そうした事例を通して機械翻訳だけで乗り切ることができない事例もあることを学習者に気付かせ、機械翻訳を使用する場合であっても相応の英語力と日本語力が必要になることを認識させることが重要だと本研究は主張した。以上の研究成果は、①研究発表「機械翻訳における日英の複数性をめぐる一考察」（令和4年JACET中国・四国支部春季研究大会）および②論文「機械翻訳における日英の複数性をめぐる一考察」『大学英語教育学会中国・四国支部研究紀要』第20号（2023年）で発表された。
