本研究は, 家族計画における子どもの数(数)と教育水準等で代表される子どもの人的資本水準(質)の決定問題を検討している。当該研究では人口変動と初等教育水準の大幅な変化が観測される発展途上国、インドネシアのデータを用いた研究を行っている。発展途上国の貧困問題、過小人的資本投資問題および、類似のフレームワークを適用した先進国の少子化問題につながる基礎的な実証研究として、この数と質との関係がどのように成立しているか、あるいはそれらは関係していないかを検証することが当該研究の主な目的である。この数と質のトレードオフと呼ばれる関係性は近年否定されてきたが、申請者の修士論文は先行研究が推定したものはこの関係性ではなく別の効果であることを示し、簡単な回帰分析によって複数の異なる効果が存在しうることを示唆している。したがって、これらの複数の効果を区別して推定するためには既存のサーベイデータのみによる純粋な回帰分析等の統計的手法ではなく、家計の意思決定のモデルに基づく数値計算・数値実験を伴う分析が必要不可欠である。本研究では観測データから家計の意思決定メカニズムを推定するのみならず、反実仮想的な政策効果を数値実験によって検証する予定である。当該年度においては上に述べた研究代表者による修士論文の日本経済学会の春季大会における発表を経て数多くの分析方法、懸念される修正点、および今後の提案を受け、主にそれらの修正を行って来た。さらに簡素なモデルによる実際のデータを用いた構造推定もあわせて行っており、今後の拡張と反実仮想実験を行う上での基礎を築いている。
