寝返り運動は、乳児期において、他の全身運動に先駆けて出現する全身運動である。多自由度の協調を要する運動であり、特に、身体の末端に位置する四肢の運動順序を考慮した場合、運動パターンの組み合わせは多様に生成しうる。この問題を含む四肢の運動順序のパターンについて、どのような運動順序のパターンが観察され、さらに発達に伴い、どのような変化を示すか検討した。生後5-6ヶ月および8-10ヶ月の乳児を対象に、寝返り運動時の体幹と四肢(寝返りの方向と同側の上肢(Ipsilateral Arm:IA)と下肢(Ipsilateral Leg:IL)、反対側の上肢(Contralateral Arm:CA)と下肢(Contralateral Leg:CL))の運動を3次元動作解析装置で計測し、運動パターンの定量的な分類を行った。分類にあたり、IAおよびILに関して静止肢（寝返り運動中、運動しない身体部位）の同定、遊肢(静止肢以外の自由に運動する身体部位)の同定、および遊肢と体幹の運動のタイミングの同定を行った。分類の結果、寝返り運動中のIAおよびILの特性について、8-10ヶ月群は5-6ヶ月群よりも遊肢として同定される運動パターンが多く観察された。また、四肢の運動パターンは、5-6ヶ月群、8-10ヶ月群ともにある一定の運動パターンに集約されることが示された。四肢の運動順序のパターンにおいて、両群とも遊肢が同時に運動するパターンが多く観察された。遊肢が非同時に運動するパターンは、寝返りの方向と対側の上肢が先行する運動パターンが優位に観察された。本研究の寝返り運動の観察を通して、身体をある場所からある場所に移動させるために、乳児がどのように身体を動かすのか、その特性が示された。本研究で得られた全身運動の発達に関する知見は、乳児の運動発達における運動の出現と成熟の機構解明に強く貢献することが期待される。
