本研究のテーマは、科学システムの作動を解明していくことである。本年度は、科学システムの基本的作動に関する歴史研究を主たる課題とした。具体的には、正当化形式の歴史的変化を、理論的枠組の形成・西洋の事例・日本の事例の三方向から扱った。理論的枠組を形成するため、社会学理論と科学史・美術史研究の架橋を行った。正当化形式の変化は、社会学理論の範疇で言えば、ウェーバーの正統化論（支配の諸類型）やギデンズの再帰的近代化論に近接している。そこでは、「カリスマ・伝統的支配から合法的支配へ」とか「知恵から専門知識へ」という変化の図式が示される。一方、科学史・美術史における18世紀の研究は、実験の信頼性をめぐる変遷を扱っている。以上の社会学理論と科学史・美術史研究とは関連性を持たないが、ともに「観察者への信頼性」が問題化したことを示唆している。西洋の事例としては、「証言」という考え方の歴史を扱った。特に、19世紀末～20世紀初頭の心霊現象研究を対象とした。19世紀半ば以降、テーブルターニング・心霊写真・自動筆記等の心霊現象が流行した。それは単なる民間信仰に留まらず、著名な哲学者や科学者が実際に研究した。しかし、学術界全体がそうした研究に同調したわけではない。心霊現象研究をめぐっては賛否が分かれ、「科学性」が鋭く問われた。その過程で、「証言」の証拠性をめぐる議論が生じており、「観察者への信頼性」の問題に幾つかの解答が与えられた様子を見て取れる。日本の事例としては、「科学的精神」という考え方の歴史を扱った。それは、1920年代から50年代頃までの科学思想に散見される考え方であり、科学の背後に精神性を見出すことが根本的発想である。論者としては、小倉金之助・石原純・戸坂潤・橋田邦彦などを挙げることができる。一連の議論には、「観察者への信頼性」に関する日本固有の問題化と解答を見て取れる。
