本研究では、動詞が本来的に持つ意味とはどのようなものかを明らかにすることを目的として研究を行った。今年度は特に、これまでに行ってきた分析を理論的な観点から捉えられるように、事象構造に基づく理論的枠組みの精緻化を行った。本研究はPylkkanen (2008)の理論に基づくとともに、この理論の拡張・発展を試みた。従来、外項と原因事象は同一の機能範疇(v)によって導入されると考えられてきたが、Pylkkanenは外項と原因事象は異なる機能範疇によって導入されるものであると考えた。またPylkkanenは、これらの機能範疇が束になって統語構造に生起するか別々に生起するかで言語は類型化できることを提案した。この類型論によると、英語は前者で日本語は後者であるとされる。本研究では、この理論的枠組みの帰結として日本語と英語では自動詞・他動詞の交替現象に関して異なる振る舞いが生じることを明らかにした。さらに、本研究の分析がドイツ語や韓国語などにも適用でき、通言語的に妥当であることも明らかにした。この分析の下では、使役の意味は動詞に本来的に内在するのではなく、統語構造に帰着できることが帰結として導かれる。本研究にとって今後の課題となるのは、bakeやcutのような動詞の理論的な捉え方である。これらの動詞は状態変化の意味に加えてある種の使役の意味を含意しているように思われる。例えば、bakeは「（パンなどを）オーブン等で焼く」ことを意味し、cutは「（紙などを）ハサミ等で切る」ことを意味する。これらの動詞には手段の意味が指定されるが、手段は通常、使役事象に関係付けられる意味概念である。したがって、これらの動詞が含意しているように思われる使役の意味を、本研究の理論的枠組みでどのように扱うかに関して、今後、慎重な考察が必要となる。
