本研究の目的は、１）先古典期から古典期（紀元後100年から900年）にかけてのメソアメリカ太平洋沿岸部の製塩活動と社会の実態を解明すること、２）イロパンゴ火山噴火が沿岸部社会に与えた影響を解明すること、そして３）紀元後5世紀イロパンゴ火山の巨大噴火前後のメソアメリカ太平洋沿岸部の生業と社会の特質について考古学的に明らかにすることにある。本研究の遂行により、「沿岸部社会・塩・火山噴火」というメソアメリカ考古学研究において重要視されながらも研究の実現が困難であった、もしくは調査研究が不十分であった課題を克服することが可能となり、生業研究や災害考古学への貢献が期待できる。研究成果は以下のとおりである。ヌエバ・エスペランサ遺跡の考古学調査では、発掘調査に加えて大量に出土する粗製土器片に付着する白色物質の化学分析、土壌成分の分析をおこなった。その結果、エルサルバドル太平洋沿岸部では少なくとも紀元後100年頃にはすでに集約的な土器製塩活動が存在し、それらは植物質食料（C4植物）を中心として定住生活を営む社会集団による季節労働であると推察され、製塩活動以外にも黒曜石などを遠隔地から入手し、墓には往時の社会的地位などを反映させていたことが明らかとなった。またイロパンゴ火山灰との層位的関係・出土遺物の分析の結果、噴火年代は紀元後400から450年頃、噴火時に儀礼をおこなう時間が存在したこと、つまり避難する猶予が存在したことが明らかとなった。また、イロパンゴ火山灰との層位的関係の明瞭な遺跡から出土した土器の型式学的分析や放射性炭素年代測定によって、火口からの距離によって噴火のインパクトが異なることを明らかにし、先スペイン期の人々の多様な火山噴火への対応の一部を考古学的に明らかにした。
