Open Caption Standards Approach for Accessible Distributed and Immersive Theatre

Too often, accessibility to new ways of enjoying media, arts and culture is an afterthought and not embedded in the early life design of new innovations. The project's vision is that captioning for deaf people, those with hearing loss and anyone who might benefit from captioned performances is developed alongside distributed audience, augmented and immersive content experiences - this means looking at how an open approach can be taken to standardising existing 'physical' in-theatre captioning and extending it to cover new ways of delivering performances to audiences, such that it is a truly inclusive and shared experience. Our project seeks to avoid the proprietary approach that currently prevails with the long term goal that, by building on an open standard approach, there is the opportunity to make captioned performances more widely available across the multiplicity of technologies that will be used to reach audiences. The innovation possibilities of new ways of enjoying performances need to be open and accessible, so this project's objective is to enable captioning to take the innovation journey in step with the evolution of new ways of consuming content.
