[0]:https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2019.00294/full#B57 [1]:https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2019.00294/full#B47 [2]:https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2019.00294/full#B35 [3]:https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2019.00294/full#B29
Across the sporting world there is growing concern about long-term health outcomes of traumatic brain injury. Recent evidence suggests that repeated exposure to both concussive ([Wilson et al., 2017][0]) and subconcussive head impacts ([Smith et al., 2013][1]; [McKee et al., 2014][2], [Ling et al., 2017][3]) can affect long-term brain health, particularly in young adults and adolescents. However, whilst there is a large body of research and a number of technologies to diagnose concussions, both pitchside and post-injury, there is currently nothing to support the identification and monitoring of subconcussive injuries. This is why, working with Harper Adams University, Stoke City and Newcastle Town FC youth academies, we are developing Mild Trauma Impact Sensor (MTIS) - a new, low-cost, highly-accurate wearable sensor +software platform to accurately identify, measure and track low-G sub-concussive impacts across entire sport teams (up to 300 players) for the first time, providing near real-time data to teachers/coaches, to help prevent repetitive mTBI and CTE.[0]: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2019.00294/full#B57[1]: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2019.00294/full#B47[2]: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2019.00294/full#B35[3]: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2019.00294/full#B29
