The most commercially exploited natural fibre textile is cotton. It is also the most environmentally damaging. It is cultivated over 3% of global agricultural land. Research by Water Footprint \[Report18\] calculates the global water footprint for cotton consumption to be 9800x10^9 cubic metres per year. This is approximately 40 cubic metres (or 40,000 litres) per hectare per day over a six-month lifecycle. It is causing extreme drought and a range of other environmental issues. Entry to the market of eco-fibres and biomaterial alternatives is demonstrating that an alternative is possible. In this project Fibe will develop a weavable fibre from agricultural waste.
