Select Direct Captions (SDC) is a captioning system for movies and live theatre productions. The system is designed for use by deaf and hard-of-hearing people but can also be used to deliver foreign language subtitles to any audience member in the language of their choice.The user will select their seat location and language preferences using our free app, and then they will see their chosen captions displayed above or below the screen. Other cinema users will be totally unaware that the system is in use, so would be able to watch the showing as normal without disturbance.No viewing aids are necessary, and no head/eye tracking is used (all seat positions are pre-calibrated on installation). The technology doesn't require the user to adjust their focus, so eliminates the eye-strain issues that can occur from using gadgets that require continual close/far refocusing. There are no individual parts or shared equipment so this eliminates the risk of damage, theft and germs that are associated with gadget-based systems.Ultimately, we are aiming for every cinema in the UK to offer SDC in at least one of its screens, vastly improving accessibility for deaf and hard-of-hearing cinema goers.
