Over the past five years, Bowie State University has provided general training for faculty to enhance
grant seeking pursuits and established a process to direct a portion of recovered facilities and
administrative (F&A) costs to Principal Investigators (PIs), and their respective departments and
colleges. Through this F&A re-allocation, the research fund was also established to support small pilot
projects involving faculty and students. The University has also established programs for undergraduate
research and faculty professional development in their fields. These initiatives coupled with active and
devoted faculty have led to a 40% increase in external funding from 2015 to present, which has largely
focused on workforce development and education training programs and limited research funding
particularly in computer science-related disciplines.
There are a number of barriers to growing research in the biomedical sciences at Bowie State University.
With high teaching loads, faculty are limited in their time to devote to grant seeking and in-depth
research engagement and time to share research ideas and cultivate partnerships has been scarce. The
University has also not been active in seeking funding for biomedical-related research support. The
Bowie State University SPAD program will enable the University to leverage current programs and
initiatives, engage partners with active externally sponsored biomedical research programs, and provide
training and relationship building initiatives to increase sponsored programs assistance, faculty research
and training, and successful grant seeking in the biomedical sciences.
The specific aims of the project, in alignment with the BSU strategic plan, are to:
Specific Aim 1. Increase Office of Research and Sponsored Programs training to bolster faculty research
and student engagement in research.
Specific Aim 2. Build research capacity for faculty to engage, collaborate and provide student training in
biomedical research.
Specific Aim 3. Enhance the ability of faculty to develop and submit competitive biomedical research
proposals.
