Plastic pollution is one of the biggest global problems currently faced. We are responsible for producing 8.3 billion metric tonnes of plastic annually. Each year in the UK 22 million pieces of furniture are discarded, with the majority ending up in landfill.I plan to develop a bioplastic for use in injection moulded furniture. The aim is to create a sustainable alternative to nonrenewable petro-chemical based plastics predominantly used in furniture manufacturing. A direct replacement that is sustainable, biodegradable and can be used with existing injection moulding machinery.The Bioplastic will utilise a natural and abundant resource of the UK, and a wonder material for carbon capture - Seaweed.
