High Rate Manufacturing Automation of Large-Scale Composites (HICOMS-A)

Current manufacturing methods for aerospace parts involve labour intensive manufacturing techniques, consumables, equipment, and multiple process steps that increase production time. To meet future demand for production rates of 80 aircraft per month, aerospace manufacturing needs to disrupt current production and technological limitations. This will be achieved, through the utilisation of this facility, by building large scale aerospace assemblies at appropriate rates with reduced part counts whilst maintaining the same accuracies required of these components within the aerospace sector.HICOMS-A, as part of the COMPASS portfolio, will enable companies to test production of future components at the scale and rates required to meet future aerospace demand. It will also provide a test bed for other industrial sectors beyond aerospace, such as land transport and renewables.HICOMS-A will deliver a world leading capability, meet significant industrial demand, and contribute to maintaining and driving UK competitiveness.
