英文摘要
BeoBia won a Young Innovators Award 2021/22 for redesigning, prototype, test and launch its insect eco-growing pods for people's homes. These products target exotic pets and small domestic animals that consume insects (reptiles, amphibians, birds, poultry, fish etc.) - harnessing insect power to recycle users' food waste and convert it into pet food and plant fertiliser, empowering people to create their own source of affordable and sustainable pet feed. BeoBia successfully achieved these ambitious targets and as of February 2022, is now retailing its insect pods in the UK, EU and USA.BeoBia now must build on its success, scale up insect production and move from domestic pet/animal insect growing to large-scale livestock feed production, enabling BeoBia to enter a larger and more lucrative market, maximising its environmental impact and aligning with UK/international policies.Reliance on soy-protein feed and high food waste negatively impacts the UK's food imports, agricultural sustainability, and food security and contributes to accelerating deforestation and climate change rates. The key technical challenge with livestock feed is producing an alternative source of protein that is competitively priced, sustainable and scalable.BeoBia wants to build on its extensive insect breeding knowledge to design and develop insect micro farms to solve these issues.
