Black Soldier Fly (BSF) technology recycles food waste into a new source of animal feed (i.e. BSF larvae) to replace other, more environmentally detrimental feeds, such as fishmeal and soybean meal. This has many potential benefits which align with circular economy principles, e.g. replacement of virgin animal feed with a waste-derived source, reduction in landfill volumes, and on-site processing of waste, reducing transportation and collection requirements. The project, in collaboration with industrial partner Inspro, will research the conversion of food waste and surplus using BSF technology within the context of waste availability and likely consumer of BSF protein. Environmental and economic metrics will inform favourable BSF technology configurations.
