Wouldn't it be great if all the food we buy packaged in plastic was packaged in paper?Plastic is not sustainable and is difficult to recycle. Paper on the other hand comes from the never-ending supply of well managed forests and is recycled and reused every day.But there is a problem with paper in food packaging. Food is often soggy or fatty and paper on its own won't stop the water or the fat leaking out. Nor will it keep the food fresh. That's where Powerdrop's non-contact coating technology comes in. Powerdrop enables us to coat thin protective layers onto the paper giving it the protective function of plastic. By keeping the layer very thin we maintain the recyclability and sustainability of paper. We get the best of both worlds.Powerdrop is non-contact so it can coat important packaging formats like paper plates and trays. It's also very low waste. Nearly every drop of coating goes where it needs to go. That means we get great performance with the thinnest layer of coating. Thin layers means low cost, low energy and low emissions.In this project Archipelago will adapt its Powerdrop technology to work with specialised aqueous-based food grade coatings and build a fully operational Powerdrop coating machine that coats real packaging to full specification performance.Powerdrop is a clean green technology. It will create and safeguard UK jobs.
