Every year, the NHS spends £8 billion on wound care. Of this budget, two thirds, or £5.6 billion is spent on the treatment of chronic and complex wounds such as venous leg ulcers, and non-healing diabetic wounds. GP's, podiatrists, community, and hospital staff all respond daily to the recurrent needs of patients whose chronic wounds require staff time, drugs, and advanced wound dressings.Despite this investment of time and effort, over half will take more than 12 months to heal. During this time painful dressing changes are frequent, infection is a constant risk, and psychological damage and social isolation is common. Worse, in high-risk groups such as diabetics, up to 1 in 5 will require amputation; and, post-amputation, the 5 year mortality rate is 39%, and for some groups is as high as 57%.In the face of this bleak reality, a number of 'advanced dressings' have come to the market. However, less than 10% of patients receive 'advanced dressings' due to their cost, and frequently poor clinical evidence base. For this reason, the majority of dressings applied to chronic wounds have not changed significantly in 50 years or more.Corryn Biotechnologies is developing a non-contact wound dressing system to transform the way chronic and complex wounds are treated. Using our handheld applicator a healthcare professional can apply advanced nanofibrous materials without contact to the patient, directly in their own home, an outpatient clinic, or elsewhere. Through the combination of Corryn Biotechnologies' unique application method, material architecture, and selected indicative compounds - current challenges in wound assessment, such as the early identification of infection, can be addressed.Corryn Biotechnologies' wound dressing materials are substantially more affordable than other advanced dressings produced: other nanofibrous electrospun dressings in the United States can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars, while a dressing produced with Corryn's applicator may cost as little as £50\. Innovate UK funding allows development and research of dressings with advanced capabilities to highlight infections far earlier that current dressing systems and diagnostic methods. This additional functionality will allow Corryn's wound dressings to function not only to reduce pain and suffering to patients immediately, but prevent the knock-on effects of serious infection. Corryn Biotechnologies aims to deliver a new paradigm of wound treatment, and a product pipeline of advanced dressings to benefit patients, caregivers, and the wider public through reduced healthcare costs and improved outcomes.
