Today, even in the most sophisticated and well-funded hospitals in the world, doctors have no direct measures of the most vulnerable, vital organ in the body: the brain. The clinical tools available are limited to those that are either highly invasive (e.g. drilling a hole in the head), highly inaccurate (e.g. cerebral oximetry methods), or both.At CoMind, we have developed a novel form of brain monitoring technology. Our technology is already in the medical device development process, with clinical trials of our first product due to begin in late 2023\.In this project, we will take our world-leading technology in a whole new direction, and add a new dimension to the critical clinical signals that CoMind's technology can already provide. By re-configuring our technology and undertaking a targeted clinical trial, this project will enable our technology to measure accurate and **absolute** measures of one of the most critical neurological parameters of all: brain blood flow. Brain blood flow (or **Cerebral Blood Flow**, CBF) is critical to brain health: too little flow and the brain suffers from a lack of oxygen, too much and the brain is at increased risk of brain swelling and stroke. Managing a patient's CBF is key to patient outcomes in intensive care and during anaesthesia, but there is currently no technology that permits doctors to measure CBF continuously at the bedside. This project will build on the recent innovations made at CoMind to create a new prototype technology. We will test and validate this prototype in healthy volunteers in the laboratory and then deploy this prototype into the clinical environment as part of a targeted clinical trial. Once complete, we will integrate the advances made in this project into our existing product development pathway to achieve a completely novel multi-parameter neuromonitoring device capable of measuring several critical neurophysiological signals including absolute Cerebral Blood Flow. This device will have an immediate and far-reaching impact across numerous patient groups, from the intensive care unit, to the operating theatre. The success of this project will allow CoMind to ensure more patients and doctors have access to this technology as soon as possible, improving patient outcomes, quality-of-life, and the efficacy of our National Healthcare System.
