A major challenge for electric vehicles (EVs) continues to be customer range anxiety, charging time and kerb weight when compared to their ICE counterparts.Solid state battery technology is an innovation that can make significant steps forward in all three of these areas, in addition safety is improved thanks to the elimination of highly flammable liquid electrolytes.Conventional batteries in road cars today typically utilise liquid or gel electrolytes. Solid-state batteries instead use solid electrolytes. Solid-state batteries have the potential to provide more energy than conventional lithium-ion batteries for the same amount of weight or space. They also do not suffer from the same temperature limitations as conventional lithium batteries meaning that charge rates can be increased.Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains will engineer a battery pack solution utilising solid state cell technology which will be demonstrated in a car by the end of the project.The battery will deliver improvedenergy density over conventional lithium-ion cells whilst matching battery weight. The battery will also include a wireless battery monitoring system which significantly reduces the parts count and complexity of packaging.
